Bruges was such a wonderful city. I can’t even begin to describe how much I fell in love with this beautiful little city. The first day where I had just a little taste was not enough, and I also think I could have spent more time here, but tomorrow I’m on to my next adventure – and country!
Having only one full day to really truly see the city, I maximized every waking moment of my day to explore! I don’t know what it is about canal locations that I love so much, Amsterdam next will make my third one! I think I love the idea of the water and the town meeting and living in harmony. And the entirety of Bruges is medieval. Just think about that? The oldest building in Toronto is Scadding Cabin (do any of you even know where that is or what it is?) which now sits on the Exhibition grounds which is from about 1794. And that is old! But it’s one tiny building in the sprawling metropolis that is Toronto.
The walls of Brugge were built between the 13th and 15th centuries, and the medieval layout of the city remains relatively intact the way it was designed, even if most of of the original walls are no longer standing. The same streets I walked down existed as they were with merchants lining the streets and markets in the centre square much like today. And that is remarkable. And what makes the historic centre a worthy UNESCO World Heritage Site.
My day started off by taking a wander back to the Grote Markt to see the square during the day for the first time since I had only been able to see it during the evening on my first night. To my surprise, there was an actual market going on! So naturally I purchased a tasty pastry from the market whilst waiting for my free walking tour to start. I highly recommend doing free walking tours in any city that you can, because you get a great feel for the city from knowledgeable guides who are often from each city. They allow you to get an overview plus some history! You end up paying attention to and seeing things you would normally just walk by. For this one in particular, our guide was a local and I learned so many amazing facts, some of which I’ve already included in my posts! After the tour I went back to all the places I wanted to spend some more time, and they were easier to find the second time around! Here’s some samples of the hidden gems I was able to visit and photograph as a result!
One of the best stops I made, and I wish I’d had more time to explore and go on a tour was to the De Halve Maan brewery. They built miles of pipe UNDER the city so they could still brew the beer in Bruges, and then it is transported to their bottling facility via these tubes. Literal river of tasty Belgian beer under Bruges!
I knew I wanted to treat myself to a fantastic dinner. You only live once they say, and I wanted to be able to romance myself in this gorgeous city! I often hesitate to eat alone in fancy restaurants, but I shook that fear aside. I had seen De Vlaamsche Pot on Instagram and I had walked by it a few times on my way to the main square, so I knew that I had to give this stunning little restaurant a try!
I went early so that I didn’t have to worry about a table, and I lucked out and had a tiny little spot with the brick walls and a small little garden on one side of me. It was tucked away in the corner of the room just for me.
I spent way too long here, but it was my decadent experience of the trip! The wine was fantastic, the bread was perfect and the mussels were divine! When in Belgium one must have mussels!
Tomorrow I am doing a canal tour and soaking up the last few hours of Bruges before off on the train to Amsterdam!
