Phantom London
Wondering why I chose the title? Did I do a London ghost walk? Did I see a ghost? Well, I did. I saw a Phantom – of the Opera!
But first, my day started with some shopping. Harrod’s is a must when I come to see their Christmas display, buy Mom some Christmas pudding and some tea. Their food sections are fascinating. I also couldn’t resist taking a quick jaunt through the toy department as well, though it’s designed differently than the last time and a bit disappointing besides the bears of course (or the giant LEGO Harry Potter).

After a quick lunch stop at Piccadilly Circus, it was time for my London theatre experience. This trip I decided to go see Phantom of the Opera, as it came highly recommended! I had managed to get second row orchestra (or as the British call them, stalls) for only £5 more than the nosebleeds (as I call them) due to a sale on Thursday matinees for September (go me!), so this show was quite the treat! I was so incredibly close to the stage and the actors and I felt it really heightened the experience.
The show was absolutely fantastic – and I don’t really like opera! It was such good story telling even through song and I must admit I even identified with the Phantom! We got to see the alternate, Scott Davies who has been for over 20 years and has played the Phantom over 2000 times! He was magical, in my opinion. I would 100% recommend to anyone who asked, especially in London as it’s been playing at that same theatre for 33 years!
I was also the “star” for a bit in that the Box Office was really looking forward to meeting me, the girl with the sort of fitting last name for the theme of the show! The gentleman who gave me my ticket even chatted with me during intermission which is how I found out about Scott!
On my way to Covent Garden I strolled through Trafalgar Square again and the blue skies were begging me to snap a few photos. And yes, that’s Canada House and all its flags! I just couldn’t resist! I even went inside as they had this really neat Group of Seven exhibition where guitar makers have painted them/designed them for each of the members.

As I’d already said, I wanted to stroll through the Covent Garden area after the show, as I felt I’d never fully explored it. I went in to the main square and heard live music from inside the building. A string instrument band had set up shop, and lo and behold, the tea that Harrod’s discontinued had a shop right there! Had I never have followed the sounds I’d never have known it exists and Mom’s favourite tea wouldn’t have been purchased.
I stumbled upon Neal’s Yard (I knew it existed I just couldn’t find it!) and it was so pretty!
Dinner was a comedy of errors. I had decided a Shake Shack was happening because, why not. They had no chocolate shakes so I said no. Then I tried a pie place. They had none of the pies I would have wanted. It led me to Leicester Square and the Bear and Staff, where I had an awesome pie. But even better than that? This Warner Edwards Rhubarb Gin. Oh my goodness was this tasty with tonic water, mint sprigs and a splash of lime. I was in heaven!
Tomorrow I wrap my time in London and head to Colchester for the best British wedding of the year!
